Unit 30 – P4 Create ORIGINAL graphic images to meet a defined user need

Step One

  • The first step that I did was creating the floor of the layout where I used three tools to make it, the fill tool, the pencil tool and the vector line tool to make the brick like effect for the floor.
  • I used the line tool for any straight lines that was going to be black to help speed up the process of making the image, then the pencil tool for any parts of the cracked effect that weren’t straight and was easier to accomplish by the pencil tool. I used the fill bucket to then fill in the shapes I made in a shade of orange/brown to make the brick like look a brick.
  • I think these colour are effective as bricks are an orange/brown colour and the black makes the cracks and different bricks stand out more.
    Step Two

  • The second step that I did was making the sky where I used the fill bucket tool and the blur tool.
  • I used the marquee tool to make sure that the fill bucket didn’t go over the floor that I had previously done and I used a gradient fill to get the fading sky effect. I used the blur tool to ensure that the colours blend together more effectively due and this made the change from blue to white was less noticeable than it was before I blurred the image.
  • I think that blue to white is effective as this makes the blue paler as it gets closer to the floor, where it gradually gets paler and eventually into white and it shows that the sky isn’t just the one colour
    Step Three

  • The third step that I did was creating the stair case that are in many of the Mario games
  • I used the rectangle tool for each of the blocks where I then used a light brown for the outline of each block and a darker brown for the block’s fill with the outline as one pixel thick so the block isn’t out of proportion for the distinction of each block.
  • I think that the lighter brown outline to a darker brown for the block’s main colour is effective as it shows that each block is separate and that there is a way to distinguish each individual block.
    Step Four

  • The fourth step that I did was creating the flag pole as well as the flag with the text in the flag. To make the flag pole I needed to create another block, similar to the one I used to make the staircase, so I used the rectangle tool again, then I used the vector line tool to make the pole and the outline of the flag. I then used the paint bucket tool to fill the flag as well as the text tool to create the letter in the middle of the flag.
  • I used a bright shade of green for the flagpole as well as the text so it would stand out against the blue and the white of the flag. I used white for the flag as it’s a neutral colour that is the colour of the flags in many original Mario games. I then used the same light brown and dark brown for the block as I did earlier, so the block looked like it was meant to match them, which it does.

    Step Five

  • The fifth step that I did was creating the circle at the top of the flag pole which I used the oval tool to accomplish.
  • I used the oval tool to make the circle at the top of the flag pole as it would make a better and more realistic circle on the image than it would have been if I drew it out by hand. I was also able to have different colours for the fill and the outline, meaning that the circle would be able to look as if it had shading around it, and hopefully a bit 3D.
  • I think that the colours I used are effective as the main colour of the circle matched the flag pole’s colour, making it look more of an item and the darker green shows that even though it is a 2D image, there is still shading in it, making the image more realistic.
    Step Six

  • The sixth step I did was creating the door of the castle as well as starting the bricks of the castle where I used three tools to make them as well as an image I found from an old Mario game to help me draw the castle. I used the fill tool, the pencil tool and the vector line tool to make the brick like effect of the castle and to make the silhouette of the door.
  • I used the line tool to make sure that any straight lines that I was going to draw would be straight and that they would be black which helped speed up the process of drawing the image, then the pencil tool for the curve of the door. I used the fill bucket to then fill in the brick shapes with the same orange/brown I used for the floor to make the brick floor and the door in black.
  • I think these colour are effective as bricks are an orange/brown colour, so it looked more like bricks and the black door makes it seem like there isn’t an actual door and that you could go straight into the castle.

    Step Seven

  • The final step that I did was finishing the brick effect as well as turrets and windows for the castle where I used three tools to make it, the fill tool, the pencil tool and the vector line tool to make the brick like effect for the floor.
  • I used the line tool to make sure that any straight lines that I was going to draw would be straight and that they would be black which helped speed up the process of drawing the image. I used the fill bucket to then fill in the brick shapes with the same orange/brown I used for the floor to make the brick floor and the windows in black.
  • I think these colour are effective as bricks are an orange/brown colour, so it looked more like bricks and the black windows makes it seem like there isn’t actual windows and that you could use them like a door due to their position.

  • After I finished my design, I copied and pasted it into an image of Archbishop Holgate’s school technology corridor, where the floor and castle weren’t able to be transferred across properly so the new image was left as the sky, the stair case and the flagpole
  • I also made the retro looking Mario character that I would add to the start of the map and possibly add different Mario characters along the wall as the characters evolve

  • Client Needs & User Requirements (What does your client require of these images?)
  • The clients wants the images I have created to decorate the technology corridor of Archbishop Holgate’s school for the IT students and teachers to see as they are in the technology department.
  • Target Audience (Who is the target audience and how will that impact the graphic you create?)
  • The images I have created to decorate the technology corridor of Archbishop Holgate’s school for the IT students and teachers to see as they are in the technology department. This will show the younger students what some of the tasks are in IT Btec  so I need to make sure that the graphic I create are appealing, follows the criteria that I have been set and is a recognisable retro game/character
  • House Style (What is your theme? What colour scheme are you using and why?)
  • The theme of my work is retro Mario where the main colours I use are brown, blue, green, white and black because each of the colours are necessary for the image
  • Image size (What size have you set your canvas to? Why?)
  • The canvas size I used is 17.46cm height by 11.11 cm width for the size scale of the graphics, but it would be increased to 29.7 x 42.0cm to fit the IT corridor at archbishop Holgate’s school easier and more effectively
  • Intended use (What is the graphic going to be used for?)
  • The graphic image will be used to decorate the technology corridor of Archbishop Holgate’s school for the IT students and teachers to see as they are in the technology department
  • File size (How big is the file size?)
  • The size of the file is 189kb
  • Production cost (Research how much it will cost to produce your graphics)
  • Timescale (How long will each stage of the process take? Designing, creating, printing etc)
  • The time it took to create and print the graphic image would be around five to six hours in total where the designing the image took half an hour, creating of the image was three and a half hours and the printing would take up to an hour due to the size of the image
  • Output Media (What device will you use to output your graphic? Monitor, Printer, Projector? What specific type of device will be needed, why?)
  • I would use professional printing company as they would be able to print the graphic image to the size I need and in colour.
