PNG ( a portable network graphic) has been around sine 1996 and is specifically designed for a web page, with a limit of 256 colours in the image. The file can saved with more colour capability and with support of an 8-bit transparency. The PNG is a lossless file, meaning that quality in the image isn't lost after each save, it is smaller than a GIF and its transparency is better than a GIF. But, some PNG files are larger than a JPEG's file, so more storage room is needed, PNG's aren't able to be animated and not all web browsers do support PNG's.
JPEG
JPEG means Joint Photographic Experts Group where it is the most used image file type for the internet. Each time a JPEG is saved, some of the imaged is lost, due to JPEG's being Lossy. JPEG's are wanting to have the smallest file size possible, so they discard a lot of the information, losing the file quality. The JPEG files can have 16 million colours - a 24-bit colour depth - and are compatible with most OS's, making it the most used image file. JPEG's can not be animated and transparency is not supported.

Gif
GIF stands for Graphic Interchange Format where it is made up of several images to make the image look as if it is moving, creating a small animation effect. Like a PNG, it is limited to 256 colours, however, the files tend to be smaller than other image file types. A GIF supports transparency and is lossless, so the only quality aspect that changes, is the colour. This means that the original file quality is the same and a file that has a limited amount of colours to begin with is a good start for GIF's. GIF's are the oldest form of image on the internet as it has been around since 1989, where it hasn't been updated.
